Case 03Line-up-Shows · Warner Bros.

Das Material fehlt. Der Termin steht. The material is missing. The date isn’t.

For about ten years we have been building the pieces that run between the speeches at Warner Bros. line-up shows — and we run the cues.

AusgangspunktStarting Point

Every January, Warner Bros. presents the year’s programme to cinema operators. The audience sits in cinema seats, knows the industry, and is meant to book at the end.

And one simple rule applies: the later a film opens, the less of it exists. January titles have a poster and first trailer footage. Autumn titles have a name.

Der GedankeThe Thought

Was fehlt, wird aus dem gebaut, was da ist. What’s missing gets built from what’s there.

Usually that’s a poster — a flat print file, built for paper. Warner Bros. rules out AI in campaign material. So the artwork is taken apart by hand, cut out, staggered in depth and animated. There is no shortcut.

And the evening has a shape that never changes: logo, approach, opening, footage, key art. Eighteen times in a row. Which is exactly why it lands when something else happens once.

Erst die Wiederholung macht den Bruch möglich. Only repetition makes the break possible.

In the living onesheet for The Mummy, the camera doesn’t move towards the studio logo but through it: six cuts in 0.8 seconds, and in the second-to-last the sarcophagus already shows through the gap in the gold. Then footage, fade, and the catchline.

It doesn’t build in reading order. First the name stands alone. Then the question grows around it — three additions, three sound cues, 0.76 and 0.68 seconds apart.

Und wenn nichts da istAnd When There Is Nothing

Der letzte Titel eines Abends war Dune: Part Three — der stärkste im Line-up, der meisterwartete. Es gab keinen Frame. The last title of one evening was Dune: Part Three — the strongest in the line-up, the most anticipated. There wasn’t a single frame.

Dann Schwarz. So it began in darkness, with no image and no logo. Four thumper beats at exactly equal intervals, each a little louder, the logo between them a little larger each time. Then the desert. Then black.

Was bleibtWhat Stays

At the first beat the room went quiet. After the black came fourteen seconds of silence. Then the speaker walked on, and the whole house applauded — for a film no one had seen a single frame of.

Die Stille war eingeplant. The silence was planned.
